Critical bystander. I used to love the books, and the first movie, but luckily I saw the light. The abusive relationships, the crappy writing, the shameless Mary Sue/self insert, all became clear to me, and now I strongly dislike it. I'm ashamed that I was ever a fan, but I'm glad that I changed my ways. Twilight is a horrible franchise, that glorifies abusive relationships and lack of talent. It sucks young girls into the books, and it makes them believe that being stalked and controlled by a man is somehow romantic. Besides this, it's also a badly written piece of glorified fanfiction, and the main character is a self-insert Mary Sue.

People comparing it to Harry Potter are doing a good job of making me lose faith in humanity.

Amen, sista! I say give Edward five minutes alone with Pam or Jessica at Fangtasia. See how hard Bella cries for him then ;)

I'm with my sister (a college English teacher) on this: "I don't like Twilight for many many reasons, but at least people are reading."

Couldn't agree more. Admittedly I'm way outside the target demographic (male aged 35!) but I was shocked at how dreadful this series of books is. I was ill and off work for a couple of days last year so decided to read it, as there was a copy of Twilight in the house. I level against it all the accusations you present here - Bella is a massive Mary Sue and I was amazed at the abusive creepiness of her relationship with Edward.

Ugh.

Thank you! I read it when I was 16/17, and I got so into the story that I didn't even see the abusive themes the books contained. And as far as the writing goes, I was to busy imagining myself as Bella, and getting into the fantasy, to notice how bad it was. That and English is not my native language. But after people pointed out all its faults, I recognized it for what it was. /rant.

That's a direct result of Bella being a very badly-written character. She's incredibly bland - there's nothing unique or unusual about her at all, and she's just a placeholder for the reader, which is really lazy writing.

Her physical appearance isn't described anywhere.

I doubt these books will stand the test of time. I sincerely hope they don't!

ALL OF THIS. SO HARD.

Also I always "wtf" at people who compare it to Harry Potter. Twilight has NOTHING on Harry Potter.

Ikr? Harry Potter is well-written, with good morals and great plots; and it got a lot of young people into reading again. Twilight is nothing compared to it. And yeah, I'm a total HP stan:P

OMH, honestly, I never read the books, only saw the first movie, and when I saw the trailer for the second one, I got simply disgusted!

The girl was basically killing herself -or trying- to get so see the guy! How pathetic and what a terribly awful message!!

Glad that you saw the light, and don't worry about those who compare them, because everyone knows there's simply no way around that!

This is exactly the problem with Twilight. It teaches young women that it's ok, even desirable and tragically romantic, to take abuse in a relationship. It hurts me that young women, and increasingly young girls like my cousins are reading this. I'm hopeful that they will be able to parse out the differences between normal behaviour and book behaviour, but the problem is that Bella never truly wises up (so far anyway).

Blargh. Also, badly written.
