I'm doing the obligatory DON'T LINK TO MY  FLOCKED ENTRIES, OR COMMENTS YOU'VE MADE IN MY FLOCKED ENTRIES, to facebook or Twitter, post. In fact, don't even link to the unlocked ones. Not a lot of you guys are friends with me on Facebook, so I won't worry too much about that, but just in case you're thinking about doing it. Most of my Twitter feed are people I know over the internet, so it's not that serious, but I still don't want it to happen. I don't want my private comments/Entries to be posted as Facebook /Twitter statuses for your/my friends/family to see. Needless to say, this would be an invasion of privacy; if I want people to know about my LJ, I'll tell them. Likewise, I won't link to any of your posts, and I'm sure of this, because I'm not even risking activating this thing;  I don't want to risk hitting the wrong buttons by mistake, so I'm not touching it.

See, the friends I have on Facebook are mostly people I know 'in real life', like my old high school friends, or my family members. I do not want any of these people to know about my LJ; in fact, I've only told a few people I know 'in real life' about my LJ, and they are all people I trust. And the other way around; only a few trusted people on here know about my Facebook, and my full real life name. The life I lead on LJ, is vastly different from for the one I lead on Facebook(when I'm even on it, but that's another thing).

My LJ: A place for my deepest feelings, thoughts, opinions, rants, fangirling, fandom, fanfic etc, all of which I share with my friends on here, who I trust with the aforementioned things. I feel like this is who I really am, and what I really like/ feel; thus, I'd feel a tad vulnerable if everything was to be shared with everyone I know 'in real life'.

Facebook: A public place, a way to keep contact with my friends and family, even the ones who I don't feel particularly close to. Obviously, I do not want slash fanfic, fangirling, and other personal things, to be shared with the people on there. Only a few fandom people are friends with me on Facebook, and I like to keep it that way. I do not want the girl who bullied me in high school to find out about my online journal; no thanks.

In fact, I don't even want YOUR family/friends on Facebook/Twitter, to know about these things. That's how paranoid I am.

This whole thing is a really bad idea imo. Seriously, WHO wants to share these things with people they know 'in real life' ???.

Anyway, now I've put that out there...

ETA: if anyone wonders what I'm talking about, this  [info]news post explains some of it.  These posts also might make the whole thing a little less confusing.

Don't have a Facebook or a Twitter, so you're safe from me.

Although I wish LJ would give us a way to get rid of the ticky boxes for those who don't have them/don't wish to have these things reposted.

well, I haven't activated mine, so I can't tick the boxes, which keeps me safe, I think, lol.

I don't really get any of this, but if you disable the pingback feature, I think that should prevent anyone from linking your stuff? I dunno.

(wandering over from, hilariously enough, a pingback)

Nope, separate features. Pingback is an automatic comment from [livejournal.com profile] pingback_bot saying, essentially, "Hi! [livejournal.com profile] iamashamed just linked to your public entry! Thought you'd like to know!" (assuming we both have pingbacks turned on, and both entries were public at the time the ping was sent).

The Facebook/Twitter thing is "Hi! You know me and love me on Facebook/Twitter; I'm sure you'd love to know that I just made an entry/comment on LiveJournal, because all of my Facebook/Twitter friends know where my LJ is and care about the stuff I write entries about, and also would like to follow me around and reply to my comments in the journals of complete strangers!"

Yeah, I realised they were separate when I read the news post again. BUT I STILL DON'T GET IT.

I mean, I've disabled pingbacks. So how did you get a pingback?

And for Facebook/Twitter, does it post any of your actual entry/comment or just link to it? And will it link to comments by other people in friends-locked posts? So many questions.

I have been hearing that people who have disabled pingbacks have still been getting them, which is worrisome.

But in theory, how it's supposed to ideally work:

Anna and Bit both have pingbacks turned on.
Anna makes a pretty awesome public post.
Bit sees the post, says "ooh! Everyone who reads me must go read Anna's post!" and makes a post linking to Anna.
[livejournal.com profile] pingback_bot says, "Ooh! A link! I wonder if it's my turn to go play?" *checks post security, public, check* *checks pingback settings, both on, check*
[livejournal.com profile] pingback_bot goes to Anna's post and says, "Psst, Bit linked to you here: [link] [quote of at least part of post for context] ISN'T THIS AWESOME!?!?!"
Anna gets the comment notification, sees the screened comment, and decides whether or not to wander over to Bit's post, or to unscreen the pingback.

Facebook/Twitter post the first little bit of your entry/comment and then link to it.

It does not matter if the entry is friends-locked or yours, at this time LJ still offers the ability to check that checkbox and easily post your comment to Twitter/FB. Anyone there who's not on the friendslist of whoever's journal this is taking place in, or not in the filter, will only see the little snippet of comment, the journal name, and then the LOL PRIVACY goat.

Unfortunately, there's no IE fix for this.

By the way, IE might be the cause for Virus '09 in the first place. It's code is famous for letting viruses and trojans through.

Hi, sorry to butt into your guys' conversation, but I was wondering if you have a "fix" for Safari? (And by "fix," do you mean that it'll disable other people's boxes?)

Thank you so much!

There's no way to stop other people from doing it to you yet. If you want the boxes to disappear from your account do this:

1) Follow these instructions for installing Greasemonkey on Safari
2) Download Disconnect

FYI, Greasemonkey allows you to install scripts to block ads and other annoying shit on the internet. Disconnect is the script that makes Facebook/Twitter crossposting disappear when you're logged in and using LJ.

I have a Facebook but I'm never actually logged in, and I will be extra special careful if I am not to crosspost anything. I feel exactly the same way about the FB/LJ divide as you do.

Also I totally use Internet Explorer too >___> I am resistant to change (on my computer)!

I tried to swich to Firefox once, when I was mad at IE for being buggy, but Firefox refused to import my favorites/bookmarks! And I have A LOT of them o_o So I gave up and IE stopped being buggy and I'm still on it lol.

www.xmarks.com It uploads all your bookmarks to the interwebs and makes it so that you can view them from any computer. It automatically syncs. You can make it sync with anything. IE crashes and loses all your bookmarks? It still has them. It's saved my ass at least once. (Like for example if you get a new computer.) It used to just be for Firefox but it looks like it works with IE now. You can even have it sync with IE and then open Firefox, download the application, and make it sync there too so that you have the same bookmarks in both browsers.

Fo' real.

I also like Lazarus, but I won't get into all my add-ons. ;)

Thank you! I will definitely think about using that. Usually I just back up my favorites at the end of each week. I'll have to poke around Firefox a bit and see if I like the handling any more than I used to.

I have Facebook, but you're not added on mine (though I wouldn't mind if you wanted to be friends :)) and I'd never link to anyone's entries without their consent anyway.

I hate this new crossposting thing LJ's got going on. None of my LJ friends are with me on FB or Twitter (I don't even have Twitter, haha) so I'm just ignoring it for now.

I was going to make a post asking my LJ friends with FB if they wanted to be friends, but this whole business with crossposting is making me hold off on it. But I trust you, bb. <3

It might be better if you PM me yours or something if you're not comfortable saying it here, because there are a million people with my name on Facebook so it may be easier if I'm the one to add you.

i was about to tell you how to undo it but i see someone already offered and i only know how to get rid of with on firefox anyway. sorry, no help from me!

i totally agree that i consider facebook a "public" space. i mean i literally have only family members and like a handful of friends that i trust A LOT on there but those people still don't need to know about my angsty LJ posts.

I seriously don't understand why anyone thought this was a good idea. :\ I want to keep my LJ and FB very separate.

And I still don't get the point of being able to cross-post comments. Entries, I understand, even if I'd never do it, because I flock this shit for a reason, ha.
